Saturday July 8th the City of Revere Historical and Cultural Society and Louis Vazza of the "Beechwood" Funeral Home and members of the Capt. James Stowers family unveiled the marker at the Stowers Family Tomb, located at the rear of our facility. According to records the Capt. James Stowers tomb was established on this location in 1795. At the time this area was the family farm, also according to record an unknown number of family members are interred here with him. Capt. Stowers was interred after his death in Nov. of 1816. Over the years the area had been neglected and overgrown, until 1987 when Mr. Vazza purchased the land for his funeral home and was made aware of this tomb. Mr. Vazza had the area landscaped and cleaned, and has maintained this area since. According to family records, James Stowers was a captain in the Revolutionary War serving under the command of Capt. Samuel Sprague. Also noted by the family is that Capt. Stowers had held various town positions such as selectman and treasurer. Those attending this dedication was Capt. Stowers great-great-great grandson Joseph F. Stowers and other family members, Mayor Thomas Ambrosino, City Council members, U.S. Army National Guard and representatives from the VFW and American Legion Posts and friends and neighbors of Revere.
We remember this day, with thanksgiving to God, the life of Captain James Stowers who served our country with devotion, loyalty and honour. We have caused his final resting place in this yard to be marked this morning with the federal flag of the country that he so boldly fought to create. Make us worthy in the sight of our Ancestors and our God to assume the responsibilities that have fallen to us. Make us worthy stewards of the free land they made for us and may be always mindful that all we possess, all that we cherish, is but lent to us for our time on this good earth. Teach us oh God to care and protect that which is sacred: our heritage, our country and our lives.
