The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Jose Toro can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Chickie and I grew up together. For many years as a very young man he was a clerk behind the counter in my father's drugstore in Chelsea Square where the Toros lived on the top floor with the Mercados - and Jimmy who worked with us as a clerk also. The Toros were among the first Puerto Rican families to come to Chelsea during the 1950's - very early pioneers who came in touch with the racism that was alive in old Chelsea, which was dying as they began to make their lives here. That racism never touched Chickie and I or my family. We always liked one another and always treated one another as friends - and for us - there was always a laugh whenever we were together. During the 1980's we again became very close during that crazy which was so destructive but also, so so much fun. Chickie was a kind and generous and humble guy. A good friend throughout a lifetime for me. I will miss him. He was my connection to a vanishing past.
